It was so great to see many of you again and great to meet many more. Student lead conference were a success! I had nearly perfect attendance at my conferences, and all the students did a fantastic job of leading their conferences and taking a responsibility for their education.
We were back at it last week, but in many respects it was a starting week for most teachers. November is so choppy that it is difficult for most teachers to keep momentum on their units. December gives teachers a nice 3 week chunk for units and those are on going throughout the 7th grade right now. Mrs. Chelin has been working on her war essay. Which is due today, many students have been working on it in class but many have not... Hopefully some took the weekend to get some writing done. If students turn it into me by Wednesday I can turn it into Mrs. Chelin. Mrs. Barnes and Mrs. Nelson have tests coming up this week. The last information I had was that the test will be on Friday. I will let everyone know if they change their mind. Looking ahead, I have not confirmed with History teachers or Math teachers, but I would expect both subjects to get a test in before winter break. I hope everyone is staying warm. Check back here for more updates in the next two weeks. I am always hearing about "No School November" around this time of year. Conferences combined with holidays and three day weekends make for a lot of missed school days. Families who are juggling work and vacation around these conferences are also put in a bind. But conferences are important. This year, as I hope you have heard, we are doing student lead conferences for the 7th graders. This means that students will be speaking directly to parents about their progress so far this year. We are very excited to be trying this. We are hoping this will help each student take more responsibility for their education. We hope that these conferences will have value far beyond the days of school In Science this week the New Unit is going strong. A lab is being finished up today. Both Mrs. Barnes and Mrs. Nelson should have the units posted on their website. Check the school site for details. In Language Arts, Mrs Seffens is working on a poetry unit. See the details here:
In Washington State History there are tests in both Mrs. Williamson and Mrs. Brooks' classes on Wednesday.
There will be no progress reports this week due to Slam conferences. I am looking forward to meeting everybody!! I am back on the blog. I was out of the building at the start of the week so I was unable to get things collected and updated. So here is what is going on this week at Desert Hills.
Mrs. Barnes and Mrs. Nelson have given their review guides to students and students are to be studying for the test that is happening tomorrow in both classes. The test is over the third unit on eclipses. Mrs. Chelin has an outline due today for a speech. The speeches will begin being presented on Monday. Mrs. Seffens is still working on their Diary projects those will be due a week from today. We are also looking forward to the Veteran's Day assembly taking place on Friday as well as preparing for our Student Lead Conferences that will start in a couple of weeks. I hope everybody is having a great week!!! Hard to believe that October will be over before the end of the week. The end of 1st quarter happens this week as well. That means report cards are coming home soon!
These grades should not be a shock to anybody as we have been sending home progress reports every week. This seems to be going well and I am getting a lot of good feedback from parents in the comments sections. I have not been able to respond to every note, but I am reading them and if necessary responding to parents or discussing them with students. All 7th grade students attempted to call home on Thursday during SLAM to schedule their student lead conferences. I have e-mailed every family that we were unable to get a hold of to schedule their meeting. A quick response would be great appreciated so that I know you are confirmed for your time slot. I am looking forward to meeting many parents that I have not yet met. A lot more going on this week: Seffens has a TEST tomorrow on phrases and clauses. This is an open note test. The Diary of _______ Rough Draft is due Wednesday in Seffens. Mrs. Williamson will be having a test in WA Hist. on Thursday. Finally, Science classes are well into their units on Eclipses. Keep checking on the unit outline for due dates and assignments. The test on this unit is scheduled for later next week. Two short weeks in October, and November is coming up soon. Seems like the 4 day weeks just keep on coming. On top of that, we are only two weeks away from the start of Second quarter. Thats right, 1st quarter is over on Friday Nov. 1st. Report cards should be sent home with the students the week after. Hard to believe we are almost a quarter of the way through the school year. Not a ton going on in this short week that I know of so far... (keep in mind things can change quickly around here!) Mrs. Chelin has her business letters due tomorrow, Tuesday the 22nd. Mrs. Seffens is starting a new project called: Diary of a ________. The final due date is Nov. 13th, but there are many deadlines in this project.
I updated the Support page with instructions to join Remind 101. This is the text messaging service that allows me to send out mass text message reminders. This is free to use for you and your student if you have a plan that has unlimited texting. This program does not give anyone (myself included) access to anybody's phone number. You can also sign up to receive these free via email. It is the best way to keep up on projects and tests going on in 7th grade at DHMS. E-mail me if you have any questions about signing up. I hope everybody has a great week!
Click here for instructions to join Remind 101. Good Morning! I have not posted to this blog for over a week and I wanted to update as to why that is: simply put, there has not been too much to report as far as projects and tests. It seems that classes have hit their stride and daily work is coming fast and furious. But tests and big projects are coming in fewer and farther between. I am still working with the History teachers to get more/better information as to their tests and projects, but Language Arts, and Science are in nearly daily contact with me about what they have going on in class. Mrs. Kadinger is also doing a great job of working with me so that I can update you on upcoming tests.
As far as this week goes there is not much going on. Students have been doing a good job of getting their progress reports signed but there is still a significant number who are forgetting and are needing to call home every week. This would be a good week to talk to your student about making sure they have a place to put stuff that needs to go home each night. The only thing of note that is due this week is a descriptive essay for Mrs. Seffens. This is due Friday the 18th. I hope everyone is enjoying the weather and fall season! Seems like we have a lot of these 4 days weeks this fall. Two Fridays with no school in October will defiantly break up the month. I am really enjoying class now that I am getting to know the students better. We are done with our first round of tests in Science and History so I am starting to see more clearly what each student needs. Not a ton going on this week. Mrs. Chelin has an Argumentative Essay due Wednesday. Science is getting started on their new units. I will have more information when I get it from the science teachers.
Parents: Now seems like a good time to Prime you on Student Lead Conferences. This year 7th graders will be doing Student Lead Conferences. This means that we will not be doing arena conferencing for 7th grade teachers. So your student will be calling you later this month to schedule that conference. So heads up on that. Also, each student needs to start collecting exemplary works for conference. So if your student brings something home that is exemplary, remind them to bring into my room and put it into their folder. Mr. Jones sent a letter home with more explanation earlier in the year. E-mail me if you have further questions! Have a great week! Mrs. Chelin has updated her October Calendar and shared it with me. So I am sharing it with you. Here it is:
Looks like there is an argumentative essay due next Wednesday and then they are getting into business/professional writing.
Quick Reminders: 1. Test in math for Kadinger tomorrow. This is over the second half of chapter 1. 2. Mrs. Seffens has two things tomorrow: a test on Subject/Predicate and a Descriptive Paragraph. Both due tomorrow!\ 3. Support progress reports are coming home today From a a long weekend. Unfortunately, I didn't have a long weekend. Students were out Friday but teachers were here all day for new training. Coming up this week students should be getting their science test results back early this week. Science will be entering Unit 2 so check back here with more information as I get it from the teachers.
In Language Arts, Mrs. Chelin should have a new calendar coming out and I will post that as soon as I have it. Mrs. Seffens has two things coming up Friday: one, is a test on Subject/Predicate; two, is a descriptive paragraph. Those are both due Friday. In math, Mrs. Kadinger has a test over the second half of chapter 1 coming up on Friday. Look for review items in the middle of week and come in and ask me questions before school or in Support class if there are things you aren't getting. I hope everybod |
